Mount Keira Cycle Climb is a heart pumping 6.5km uphill NSW Cycling Sanctioned road climb.

Put your road climbing legs to the test, as your 6.5k uphill challenge awaits. Held on closed to traffic roads, your journey begins at Edmund Rice College School entry gates and winds its way up the scenic climb, with an 6% average gradient to the spectacular look out finish- a 440m total elevation.

Open to the novice, recreational or competitive rider, you can enter to race, for a time, personal challenge or simply a fun ride.

Course Profile In Detail
Start:

Mount Keira Road, at the entry gates ofEdmund Rice College.

1.5km

builds quickly from 2% to 8% on smooth road to Mount Keira Demonstration School.

1.5-5.5km:

3-4% average. Gentle sweeping road,wide, smooth surface with scenic views 

5.5km-6.5km

2-15% features two (~150-200m) hills, the first at 800m to go, 10%, and next shortly after at 15%! than 200m (4%) to the finish..

Course Profile In Detail
Start: 

Mount Keira Road, at the entry gates of Edmund Rice College.

1.5km: 

builds quickly to 8% on smooth road to Mount Keira Demonstration School.

1.5-5.5km:

3-4% mostly gentle sweeping road and turns with scenic views passing picturesque Byrong Park, Archery Fields, Girl Guides and Scout Camp.

5.5km-6.5km

The final 'burner' km turn right off Mt Keira Road to enter Queen Elizabeth drive as you make the final climb to the summit.

~500m to go

You will meet a 100m 10% hill and soon after the ‘kicker’ 100m hill of 15+% gradient and than its only a 100m 4% gradient to the finish!!

7am-8am at Event Start.

Entry Fees
Cycling Australia Members:

• $25 - Junior (12-17)

• $35 - Adult (18+)

Non Members: Sanctioning requires all non-members to purchase an $7 (discounted ) one day event licence this is reflected in the price below

• $32 - Junior (12-17) inclusive one day NSW Cycling licence

• $42 - Adult (18+) inclusive one day NSW Cycling licence

Event inclusions: 

Official NSW Cycling sanctioning, road closures, traffic controls, rider bibs, event insurance, cycle mechanic, refreshments, course management, awards and prizes.

Sanctioning:

The event will be sanctioned by NSW Cycling for both members and non-members. This ensures the event is professionally organised with insurances and services. Those who are not members of NSW Cycling will be required to pay $7 for a one day licence this fee is normally $15.

Entry: 

Is open to the public.

Timing: Services 

Time chip timing and results / Refreshment station / First Aid / Music / Coffee & BBQ (bring cash!) / entertainment / Prizes and a great atmosphere!

Cycle Suitability: 

Riders are permitted to use Road, Triathlon, Mountain, Hybrid/Fitness and Tandem* bicycles that meet normal Australian safety guidelines, all riders MUST wear an Australian standard approved helmet. BMX, bicycles without proper fitted brakes and motorised bicycles are NOT allowed.

Can I walk if some parts I find too steep?

YEs! Whilst the road is not too steep, there are two tougher parts. One at the 300m to 1.3km mark and the final 200m. If need KEEP LEFT, and WALK areas you find a little difficult than back on and peddle away!

Bike Mechanics - By Spearman Cycles:

Will be located in the vicinity of the start line to assist with minor service and mechanical work.

Transport & Parking

Participants can opt to cycle or drive and park near the event start with ample near by parking along Mount Keira Road.Additional Parking at the rear of Edmund Rice College or side streets. 

SPECTATORS

With road closures you can only access the lookout

1. Prior to 8am - ie drop your rider to registration and ensure you drive up prior to 8am start OR 2. 2. 2.Drive via Mt Ousley > Clive Bissell drive, park at entry to look out. Access to lookout is 850m away by foot

Weather Implications

The event operates under a strict risk management process and will generally operate as planned in most conditions. As the venue, and road surface is of a high standard Mount Keira can sustain moderate to high levels of rain and wind without need for closure or event cancellation.

High winds:  

Mount Keira is mostly protected from winds. If though extreme winds prevail (Greater than 50km/hr, safety concerns may require the event to be cancelled and/or course modifications and age restrictions.

Wet Weather:    

Low-moderate rain fall: event planned to continue as normal, assessment on level and if age/course restrictions apply. High-event planned to continue with age restrictions and level, course modified to shortened 5.5km. 

Severe weather pattern: 

See social media announcement 24 hours prior. If due to to safety the event will be ether cancelled, delayed start or modified course.

Safe Descending

Due to the nature of the event return is via your own bicycle. We will be strictly enforcing a GO SLOW safe descent.

Please Note: 

NO riders will be allowed to descend the summit prior to 9.30am Descend SLOWLY down MT Keira from base of Queen Elizabeth drive and observe all safety signs for GO SLOW. 

KEEP LEFT and be cautious of other cyclists, and runners/walkers on the road.

Insurance

We would strongly recommend that you take out your own personal accident insurance. Visit Velo Insurance. 

Pre Event Bicycle Check Advice

All riders are encouraged to conduct a thorough bike safety inspection. An authorised mechanic at your local bike shop as Spearman Cycles is your preferred option.

Ensure to check   

• Bicycle front and rear brakes in working order.    

• Chain is not damaged, oiled and good working order.    

• Front and rear wheels run true (no major wobbles).    

• All nuts and bolts tightened as per bicycle specifications.    

• Gears are in good working order.    

• Helmet is Australian Standard approved, correctly fitting and appropriate for age.

Ride Safe

Ensure you are adequately prepared before the event.        

Adhere to event waiver.             

Use an appropriate road / recreational bicycle and Australian Industry standard helmet.        

Bring your helmet, pump, spare tube, small tool kit and water bottle and mobile phone with you. Be prepared for all weather conditions – bring sunscreen & a lightweight rain jacket. Keep the LEFT of Road at ALL times.                                            

Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after the ride. Do a light warm up before the ride. Check your tyres and brakes before starting.

Remember the race road rules and have a great day.

Ride Prep-Training

Some basic training will prepare you and ensure you get the most out of the day. Most people can complete the ride without specific training, though a little more fitness and time on the bike beforehand will make your day more enjoyable. This program assumes you have basic skills including stopping, starting, and riding with other cyclists. Whilst a short cycle the event involves a hill climb with some steep sections and descending. Practice or seek assistance if you are not familiar with riding up and down climbs of this nature.
